Film of the Week: 2

United 93 (2006) |
Exactly ten years ago, a dark cloud fell upon New York and the world watched in horror as the World Trade Center fell to the ground.I'm pretty sure most people remember where they were on that day. I remember perfectly myself, I was living in Malta at the time and my father and I were heading out to buy a hamster. I remember walking towards my father in the kitchen when I saw him watching the breaking news on CNN with his mouth wide open.
At first I thought I was watching a film, but I saw my mother gasp in horror whilst my father's mouth remained open. I literately could not believe my eyes.
On the morning of September 11th, 2001, several terrorists hijacked and seized control of four 767 jets. Two of them were flown into the twin towers, resulting in 2,753 deaths including the lives of 343 brave New York City fire-fighters and other local authorities.
A third plane was flown to Virginia where it hit and damaged the Pentagon (exactly on it's 60th anniversary) and the fourth plane was believed to be targeted at the White House. However the tremendously brave passengers of this flight were said to have fought back and made sure that if they were going to die, they were not going to take any other innocent lives with them and the plane crashed in a field outside Pennsylvania.
Five years later, The Bourne Supremacy director Paul Greengrass directed one of the boldest films of the decade. It came too soon for many but I think it came at the right time. It was one hell of a movie with no major actors and amazing direction.
It focused purely on the passengers of the fourth flight and how they were believed to have been hijacked. The passengers find out about the other three hijackings while on-board and decide to take action rather than wait to kill many other innocent people with their plane.
It is a very hard film to watch, we see many passengers making phone calls to loved ones, praying in their final moments and most of all chaos. It's a gut-wrenching experience, one that still gives me chills down my spine.
