Film of the Day: 69

RoboCop (1987)
It's finally morning here in London and I feel as though I have just awaken from a bad dream. Last night, my friends and I were all communicating over facebook and other means of chatting, reporting the chaos and making sure that we are all safe.

It was absolutely unbelievable, words cannot express the disgusting mentality of the so called people that took part in these riots and since I was at my girlfriend's house (which is in South London), we were in the midst of it.

We saw stores bashed in, from pawn shops to Pizza joints to clothing stores, to groceries, even Westfield (of course non of these retards went near their kryptonite... book stores).  We even witnessed a scum-bag kick some guy's face in for no apparent reason.

Looters smashing into stores and coming out with big screen TVs and others with just soda cans and a smile on their face as my anger arises. Yet even though we called the police (as the rioters were getting close and we feared they might get in to our apartment), when they arrived, it was too late and had only caught one guy (and as my friend stated on facebook that hopefully he's a little coward and rats on all his friends). You know, like our mayor who's still on holiday!

The media was saying something about it starting with a shooting on Saturday and I also read on the BBC news that technology could be to blame... bullshit. These "people" don't need a reason, they enjoy it. They see an opportunity to cause chaos, they grab onto it and they don't want to let go, and the cops are doing almost nothing about it!

All I kept thinking last night was that they're aren't nearly enough police for these punks, so why didn't they call in the army? And I dazed off into a dreamworld where RoboCop came to London and showed these scum-bags who's boss (if only)!

In 1987, Paul Verhoeven unleashed this cult classic which became a phenomenon. Set in the near future and beginning with a cop (Peter Weller) who was horrible gunned down on a job. He is later the result of a technological breakthrough, a half man half machine cop who is unleashed upon the uncontrollable crime of Detroit.

I personally think it is one of the better action films of the 1980s, kind of reminds me of a robotic Dirty Harry... which is great. It also had some great effects for it's time and had the same special effects guy from The Thing (Rob Bottin) and we got some pretty effective scenes. Such as the unforgettable scene when  the toxic waste falls onto one of the villains.

What I hope does not happen in London is reports of Police brutality. How else can the police handle these ridicules riots, and if we do hear about rioters being beat up by the police, I'll be in-front of the TV... cheering on the cops... and waiting for the army!
