Film of the Day: 52

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)

Back in the 1950s, there was an endless amount of low budget B movies about the atomic age. We've had films from the amazing Them to the laughable 'so bad it's fun' movie The Atomic Submarine.

We also got a variety of colossal sized creatures such as Godzilla or Attack of the 50 Foot Woman in the size-changing theme. Then we got the reverse in Jack Arnold's cult classic adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel.

Our main character is Scott Carey and one day he and his wife Louise are on-board a cabin cruiser catching some sun. Whilst Louise goes below deck, Scott finds himself in some sort of golden low mist and is left with tiny glitter particles on his body that quickly fade away, but thinks nothing of it.

A few days later however he beings to notice that he has shrunk a few centimeters. Later his clothes don't fit anymore and he begins to shrink in inches and feet. It gets out of hand and doctors have no explanation and he is faced with the fact that he may keep on shrinking until he has totally vanished. He is also faced with the fear of his size as he battles a cat, a spider and other dangers.

It is a terrific study of a man faced with the fear fading away and dealing with the dangers that surround him. And all these films started being made in the atomic age after the Manhattan Project which took place today in 1945. It was the first time the US started testing nuclear weapons, in New Mexico.
