Side By Side (2012, Christopher Kenneally)

Side by Side is a fascinating new documentary by newcomer Christopher Kenneally. It was premiered at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival and co-produced by Keanu Reeves.

The film, which mainly features Keanu interviewing numerous directors, editors and cinematographers, asks the question which is of considerable concern to numerous directors, cinematographers and us film geeks. Will this digital world that we live in mark the end of film?

We get interviews from numerous artist on their opinion of the new form of cinema. Some say they use it to their benefit such as numerous film students of course and Robert Rodriguez who stats that Sin City would not have been made had it not been for digital.

Others such as Anne V. Coates (editor of many classics including Lawrence of Arabia) state that even though she is not used to the use of computers, they've adapted as they felt it was the only way to survive.

Even one of my favourite directors Martin Scorsese made Hugo the previous year in digital and stated he will no longer make films in the traditional film standard. Yet a number of people think that the 'magic' is gone and that there is a lose of greatness and too much amateur work being allowed in the business.

However we look at it, there is always going to be changes made in the industry, we can either embrase it or be against it. I for one have numerous tv episodes on my smart phone, yet I wont watch a film on it but I also go to the cinema less than I used to. Is the magic of film really lost?

Whatever your opinion on the matter, this documentary is definatly worth a look and if you are a true film buff, you cannot miss it.
