Film of the Day: 39

Mary Poppins (1964)

There are many famous gorgeous cathedrals in Europe, such as Notre-Dame (France), Cathedral of Santa Eulalia (Spain), St John's Cathedral (Malta), Milan Cathedral and so on. However today, the first cornerstone of St. Paul's Cathedrals was laid in London in 1675 (also believed it could be the 25th or 28th).

This is a gorgeous Anglican cathedral which was dedicated to the Apostle St. Paul.  It belongs to the Church of England and has been built on Ludgate Hill, the highest point of the City of London. It is however believed to be the fifth Cathedral built as there have been four previously built on the same spot since 604 AD.

As regards to movies, when ever I think of St. Paul's Cathedral, personally I always think of Mary Poppins and that famous song "feed the birds" as Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) sings to the two children about the old woman who sings and feeds the birds on the steps of the Cathedral.

It is a beautiful dreamlike scene with the pigeons flying all around the dome, and as Mary Poppins is singing this beautiful lullaby to the children, she has also has a snow-globe of the cathedral in her hands with the birds.

We also see the lady at the steps of the Cathedral as George Banks (the father of the children played by the wonderful David Tomlinson) walks the children to the bank to invest their money.

Nowadays we get a lot of family films of all sorts, however I can honestly say they don't make great family movies like this anymore I'm sorry to say. It is a film that all children know, love and cherish and yet even adults love it still. I remember watching this film so many times as a child and both my mother and my father would enjoy watching it with me, even today.

My personal favourite scenes were that of the room where Bert (Dick Van Dyke, whom I loved as a child), his friend, Mary Poppins and the children are having tea on the ceiling and cannot stop laughing. This scene still makes me laugh, and laugh. Then of course there are the scenes on the roof tops with Bert and his chimney sweep friends. Not only is the music fantastic but the dreamlike vision of London from the roof tops and gorgeous images always would take my breath away and to be honest, it still does.

It was directed by Robert Stevenson, the man who has given us the family treasures Old Yeller, Kidnapped, The Love Bug, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and even the great Jane Eyre. Mary Poppins is and will always remain one of the greatest family films of our time.

  1. Another great Musical with two of the better actors, with Dick Van Dyke as my preference! I used to watch his early show with Mary Tyler Moore, but never got to where I would have liked him to be! Julie Andrews is the woman with a superior voice, and the star of Sound of Music.
Good movie with lots of laughs in it!

  2. Ironically she got to play the lead in these two movies (i do not care for the sound of music however) but in real life apparently she is nothing like these characters and directors have had problems with her swearing in the past! hehe
