Film of the Day: 38
Bugsy (1991)
Warren Beatty is one of the most interesting characters to watch in cinema. He has played various terrific roles in the past such as the famous Clyde Barrow (Bonnie & Clyde), John McCabe (McCabe & Mrs. Miller), John Reed (Reds), the under-rated Dick Tracy, and here in Bugsy.
This is one of Beatty's finest performances as gangster Ben Siegel, a man who falls in love with hollywood and has an ingenious idea that hardly anyone believes in. He was the main man behind the idea and development for metropolitan Las Vegas.
It tells the story of how Bugsy tries to get The Flamingo built with a $1 million budget that soon becomes a $6 million budget and does everything in his power to get it made. One great thing about watching the character Bugsy is that he is ticking bomb as you never know when he is going to explode with his infamous short temper.
Directed by Barry Levinson (Diner/Good Morning Vietnam/Rain Man), the film features a stunning cast with Annette Bening, Harvey Keitel, Ben Kingsley and Elliott Gould and it truly captures the essence of the 1940s.
When the film was released in 1991, it had numerous good reviews and was nominated for 10 Academy awards (winning 2). However, many had problems with the ending of the film. In the film, he is shot dead whist watching himself on a movie projector at home in Christmas 1946. Where as the real Bugsy was shot at home reading a newspaper on the couch with his associate Allen Smiley.
Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegelbaum was born in Brooklyn to a poor Jewish family on February 28, 1906 and was shot dead today in 1947. He was also the influence of the character Moe Greene in Mario Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather. Then Francis Ford Coppola decided to kill his character with a bullet though his eye in his 1972 epic masterpiece The Godfather.
