Film of the Day: 17

Glory (1989)

Today in 1863, during the American Civil War, the 54th Massachusettes Volunteer Infantry left Boston to fight for the Union. In Honour of this Infantry (the first African American regiment) we have Glory from 1989.

This was Edward Zwick's first major hit and is easily one of the best films ever made about the Cival War.  It also features one of Denzel Washington's most powerful performances (which won him the oscar).  The screenplay was based on the personal letters of the Colonel Gould Shaw himself (who in the film is played by Matthew Broderick) and two novels 'This Laurel' by Lincoln Kirstein and 'One Gallant Rush' by Peter Burchard.

The film features some truly impressive battle scenes and the score which was orchestrated by James Horner is also exquisite.  The only problem I might have with the film is that it is mainly told through Shaw's eyes.  The film is made to honour the first African American regiment, i think it would have been better to see the film mainly through their eyes.  Asides from that, this is a film that truly shows you what these men went through, some were escaped slaves, some were educated black men who were frequently beaten yet all these men fought together with Shaw and his fellow officers for the one thing that mattered to them... freedom!
