The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

How could you top the great 'Star Wars'?  Well the answer to that was 'The Empire Strikes Back' which was released today in 1980 and became the highest grossing film of the year.  This later became the 12th most highest grossing film of all time.  This is a much darker and more down to earth film than the original and as a sequel, it is also rich in detail, storyline and character.  This ranks as the greatest sequel ever made along with The Godfather: Part II (even though it almost feels wrong to call it a sequel).

Upon it's release however it received mixed reviews from it's critics yet as of the 1990s it was deservedly recognized both by fans and critics as the best film in the franchise.
