Near Dark (1987, Kathryn Bigelow)

Before director Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Oscar for best director*, she directed what is probably the most badass vampire movie ever made. This is an excellent fresh new look at the genre, it's a full on action horror film with a sort of western noir look that never even uses the word 'vampire'. Forget The Lost Boys; this adrenalin rush is one of the most exciting films in the genre.
Kathryn Bigelow also directed: Point Break & Strange Days & The Hurt Locker*
Rating: 4 / 4
